Early Years & Education

Hart was born the youngest of two boys to Nancy Hart, a systems analyst for the University of Pennsylvania, and Henry Robert Witherspoon. Hart’s father was a cocaine addict who spent much time in jail so he was raised, for the most part, by his mother in a single-parent household in North Philadelphia. He often cites his mother’s strength and tough love as major influences, and found humor to be his coping mechanism during a difficult childhood. His father eventually sobered up and the two made peace before Henry died in 2022.

Hart dreamed of playing professional basketball as a teenager and even went to a La Salle basketball camp with future NBA legend Kobe Bryant. He graduated from George Washington High School in Philadelphia and attended the Community College of Philadelphia for a short time before dropping out. He moved to New York City, sold shoes, and started stand-up comedy as “Lil’ Kev the Bastard.” It was rough going at first, mimicking other comedians and trying to find his voice, but comedian Keith Robinson took him under his wing and helped him develop material from his real life.

Kevin Hart’s Profession

Hart’s big break came in 2001 when he was cast in a recurring role on the NBC sitcom Undeclared by Judd Apatow. He continued to build his stand-up reputation with successful comedy albums and specials such as I’m a Grown Little Man (2009), Laugh at My Pain (2011), Let Me Explain (2013) and What Now? (2016). His Laugh at My Pain tour made millions and his 2016 What Now? special was filmed in front of a record-breaking crowd of more than 53,000 at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field. Tours that followed like “Irresponsible,” “Reality Check” and his current “Acting My Age” (2024–present) have solidified his place as one of the biggest touring acts in comedy.

Hart went from supporting roles in films like Scary Movie 3 (2003) and Soul Plane (2004) to a leading man on the big screen with breakout hits Think Like a Man (2012), Ride Along (2014) and its sequel, Central Intelligence (2016) opposite Dwayne Johnson and the Jumanji franchise (Welcome to the Jungle in 2017 and The Next Level in 2019). He has also lent his voice to animated hits such as The Secret Life of Pets and Captain Underpants. Notable other films include Night School (2018), The Upside (2019), Fatherhood (2021), Lift (2024) and Borderlands (2024). Projects in development as of 2026 include Jumanji: Open World and 72 Hours.

Hart’s an entrepreneur and prolific producer, in addition to performing. He founded Laugh Out Loud (LOL) in 2017 and in 2022, LOL joined forces with Hartbeat Productions to form Hartbeat, a multi-platform media company. He’s got deals with Netflix, Peacock, Sirius XM and more and has produced projects like the Die Hart series/films and the Kevin Hart: Don’t F**k This Up documentary. He also co-founded the tequila brand Gran Coramino in 2022. His business acumen has made him one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, both in front of and behind the camera.

The couple has two children together, a son named Kenzo (born November 2017) and a daughter named Kaori (born September 2020). Hart admitted to cheating in 2017, while Eniko was pregnant with Kenzo, after a video surfaced and an extortion attempt was made.
