Shivani Nirupam: Weaving Mumbai’s Chaos into Conscious Luxury

The country is one of such changes that in every aspect from industry lifestyle to culture everything changes constantly as the trends change. Among these people, the one who remains consistent with her style without being affected by the changes is Shivani Nirupam. A Mumbai-based designer, Shivani Nirupam not only works independently but also started Label Shivani NIRUPAM whose collections feel really alive with the city’s energy but also express the designer’s thoughts without too much words. Sustainability is a quiet feature that the designer integrates with their clothes.

This collection of Shivani’s, which was started in the year 2022, has rapidly established a unique position within Indian contemporary fashion. It offers mostly print-based Indo-Western fusion clothing: flowing lehengas shararas drapped dresses or anarkalis that can be made into dresses, and multi-wear items for festive celebrations and everyday casual wear.

From Instinct to Label

Shivani started her venture not on the backdrop of fashion, but with a family of journalists and politicians in which discussing design was quite rare. Though, one thing she did have was intuition. She would be the one to come up with the design ideas for her peers while still in school. It was not through the sketching that she was expressing her ideas but more by visualization. That little urge of hers eventually lead her to opening of the Label Shivani Nirupam.

“All along I wanted nothing more but to create my own things, and it just made sense to choose fashion as the medium, ” she has mentioned. The label was not a waiting game or a matter of finding one’s way through already made shapes. It was born out of a passion, an imagination that wanted to take Mumbai’s mix of very fast speed monsoons flower stalls running everywhere, and total unabashed self-confidence and turn it into cloth.

Mumbai as Muse

Each collection is a tribute to the city. World of Warli joined hands with an artist from the village of Satara to portray rural Warli styles through the lens of modern life in Mumbai, depicting towers cars stick figures, and the ocean, before digitally printing textile reproductions on sharp, statement silhouettes. Bambai Ki Baarish conveyed the poetic, fluid melancholy of the monsoon. Phool Bazaar embodied the colorfulness, the kitschy, exuberant character of the iconic flower market in Dadar with big prints, romantic designs, and exuberant maximalism.

Her 2026 Mid-Summer range was her fashion debut at Bombay Times Fashion Week and contained 22 looks. This light, breathable collection, that included crape and chiffon materials with sun faded flowers in turquoise, lemon fizz, living coral, lavender, and lime green tones, was the highlight. Pitta work, tiny sparkles, beads, and dabka were all minimal so that the overall appearance remained elegant. Relaxed and multi-purpose silhouette designs were for slow, sun-kissed days that still were dressed well. “The concept was to portray the mess, yet lovely, essence of Mumbai flower markets, the colors movements the energy, ” shared Shivani.

“Florals Really go beyond the colors. They are vehicles of narrating a story through them.”

Conscious Extravagance

The unique selling point of the brand is that it doesn’t consider luxury and sustainability as conflicting ideals. Shivani explains her concept as a “conscious extravaganza, slow fashion with zero waste.” Her fashion line is mostly made-to-order, produces in limited quantities, focuses on fabric optimisation, and creates items that can be transformed for other looks and scenarios instead of getting discarded after a one-time wear.

In her opinion, luxury is care, time, and longevity, not overabundance. “A responsibility is to one’s self and environment if a garment lasts longer and is worn more ways, ” she says. Their clothes are for stylish women of all ages: one piece could look fun for a 25-year-old and yet, it could be classy for a 55-year-old. Being versatile isn’t just an add-on, it is the key part of their brand manifesto.

The heart and soul of her work are still Prints, for sure. In fact, she regards them as the way through which one can remember, be active, or tell a story. When it comes to bride and formal wear, they help her break the mold of what is usually expected from wedding fashion by offering a personal choice to the couple. This means that the couple, their culture, or memory can be turned into motifs that are much more heartfelt than the generic ones.

Building Without Permission

Shivani’s candidness is one of her trademarks, much like her unique style. From admitting about being nervous for her first Fashion Week show to being wrong about women appreciating versatility, and finally confessing that the phase of developing a brand is still a “messy middle”, she shares everything with honesty. Though she appreciates international endorsement that she says, is only a plus. Her primary goal is, and she will, continue to focus on the Indian woman and her challenges, day-to-day life, and heartbeats of emotions.

With each new venture, her goal and plans are pretty much set: go for responsible fashion while maintaining Label Shivani’s connection to the artisans, create fashion pieces that reflect both the modern world and the traditional roots that are uniquely Indian. And, she hopes that Label Shivani Nirupam will become synonymous with more than just aesthetics by the time she turns forty, something that is thoughtful and meaningful enough for women to identify and relate to when they are wearing the clothes.

In a market full of noise and competition, Shivani Nirupam’s creations remind us that fashion can be still an intimate matter of a place and with a purpose. Her designs are subtle enough to never demand attention; on the contrary, they gently present themselves to us. Through the clothes, the Mumbai energy, the slow and steady craftsmanship process and the silent, self-assuring personality of her creator come together.
